Khao Sok National Park and Cheow Ian Lake
On December 22nd 1980 The Royal Forest Department of Thailand declared Khao Sok as the 22nd national park of Thailand . Khao Sok National Park covers 645 km2 of pristine wilderness and is part of one of the oldest rainforests in the world.

It borders Sri Phang Nga National Park to the south-west and Kang Krung National Park in the north. Together this whole region of protected rainforest covers a huge area of almost 4000 km2 In the Khao Sok rainforest you will find waterfalls, wild elephants, monkeys, water buffalo, bears, leopards and otters amongst a host of other astonishing creatures. In Khao Sok National Park you may also find one of the largest flowers in the world: rafflesia kerrii, which measures a record-breaking 80 cm in circumference!

Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park is a man-made lake, created in 1982, and covers an area of 160 km2 and is situated 180 km northeast from Phuket in southern Thailand . It is surrounded by dense rainforest and chalk mountains which soar to 1000 meters in height; this combination of seclusion and lush vegetation has made Khao Sok National Park a perfect habitat for a breath-taking array of animals, plants and trees.

An incredible diversity of bird life dwells around the Cheow lan Lake : five different types of hornbill, various kingfishers and eagles can be spotted here. The Cheow lan flooded valley lake in Khao Sok offers perfect conditions for many different species of fish, including Big Giant Snakehead, Big Hampala Barb (otherwise known as the Jungle Perch) and world class fly and lure fishing in the Khao Sok rivers for the powerful Thai Mahseer.

Cheow Lan Lake is one of the last places where you can see the Giant Mekong Catfish in the wild in Thailand .
