Fly Fishing in Thailand for Thai Mahseer and Hampala Barb is similar to fly fishing for trout in New Zealand or English chalk streams. The Thai Mahseer is very shy, but you can often spot them in the clear water (sight fishing).

The Thai Mahseer will take nymphs, streamers and dry flies. The power of the Thai Mahseer is truly amazing: they hit hard and will put you and your gear to the test! Customers often compare the speed of the Thai Mahseer to the famous saltwater Bonefish. Many of the rivers in Khao Sok National Park connect with Cheow Lan Lake . Up in these rivers, the biggest Thai Mahseer caught was no less than 13 kilograms! The biggest Thai Mahseer we have heard about came from the waters of Cheow Lan Lake and was no less than 17 kilograms ! This Thai Mahseer was caught on a baited hook


The rainy season (May to October) in Khao Sok National Park is the spawning season for the Thai Mahseer and the Hampala Barb. The biggest Thai Mahseer and Hampala Barb come from Cheow Lan Lake to the smaller streams and rivers to go upstream for spawning. The best time to go fly fishing for these fish is at the end of the rainy season.

During the dry season in Khao Sok National Park stocks of Thai Mahseer up to 4 kg inhabit the pools we fly fish in and offer great action. You can choose to move higher up the rivers in Khao Sok and camp overnight. (sleep in a hammock, camp near the river. Thai Freshwater Fishing is the only fishing company who has great experience with camping in the Khao Sok jungle). Fly fishing in places where few people have been fishing before, or you can return to our camp at Cheow Lan Lake at the end of the fishing day.

Our fishing policy:
Our fly fishing locations in the Khao Sok National Park rivers consist of 3 big rivers and 4 smaller streams. Thai Mahseer is a very shy fish and to enjoy this jungle fly fishing experience optimal we advise not more than 2 anglers per stream/river. We advise this because of the character of the fishing.


When booking a guided fly fishing trip with Thai Freshwater Fishing, all fly fishing equipment is included. We only use high quality fly fishing equipment but you are obviously more than welcome to use your own fly fishing equipment if you prefer to do so. The fly fishing equipment we provide, free of charge:

Fly rods: Sage fly rod. models: Xp, Sp, Rplxi, R.L Winston fly rod. model: Boron ll-Mx and Thomas & Thomas fly rod. model: Vector weight 6 to 9.

Fly reels are: Abel Super Series, Loop Fly Reels, model: HD ,LW and WaterWorks-Lamson Fly Reels: model: Velocity.

We use Scientific Anglers fly lines. As leaders we use Airflo polyleader, Rio fluorocarbon or Sufix fluorocarbon as tippets.

We manufacture our own high-quality flies on Mustad, Owner and Gamakatsu hooks. These flies have been extensively tested and are the best flies you can get. We know which flies works in these waters, and we will share our trade secrets with you!

• All transport from Phuket Airport or any hotel in Phuket and Khao Lak to Cheow Lan Lake.
