Giant Snakehead Fishing on Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park Thailand

Fighting a Big Giant Snakehead, which has one of the most powerful strikes of any fresh water fish, is the ultimate fishing adventure in Thailand . For a truly once-in-a-lifetime fishing experience we recommend that your fishing trip on Cheow Lan Lake takes up a minimum of three days.

The Giant Snakehead is a very territorial and aggressive fish, especially when with its young. They like to hide underneath trees and other greenery. The Giant Snakehead likes to hide behind snags from where it can attack unsuspecting prey. To catch Giant Snakehead you need to cast the lure close to where it is lurking, in water with lots of vegetation, waiting for its next meal to appear!!! That can be a challenge in itself.
The best time to fish for Giant Snakehead in Cheow Lan Lake is normally, early morning and in the evening. In general, the Giant Snakehead we catch in Cheow Lan Lake is from 2 kgs and up. There have been caught Giant Snakehead of 11 kgs!!!
On our fishing trip for the Giant Snakehead you are also likely to catch the hard-fighting Hampala Barb also called Jungle Perch, These powerful fish provide good action The Hampala barb is a hungry predator and will take most lures or flies that are thrown to it.

Giant Snakehead Fishing on Cheow Lan Lake is done from long tail boats (with electric engine!), which in some ways can be compared to lure fishing for Pike, except the Giant Snakehead are much more powerful than the Pike!

The Giant Snakehead is a top predator fish. The Giant Snakehead take surface lures, diving lures, popper flies and large streamers. When we fish in the weedy and snag areas on Cheow Lan Lake , we use top water lures and in the deeper water we use deep diving lures. The Giant Snakehead take the lure hard and will dive to the nearest snag or cover with constant head shaking. Giant snakehead fishing, with top water lure, is adrenaline fishing at its best!

If you are up for even more adventures we can take you on a Jungle River Fishing experience as well on the rivers of Khao Sok National Park.You can choose to move higher up the rivers and camp overnight. (sleep in a hammock, camp near the river. Thai Freshwater Fishing is the only fishing company who have experience with camping in the jungle). Fishing in places where few people have fished before, or you can return to our camp on Cheow Lan Lake at the end of the day. 

The Giant Snakehead usually never go up the river this far but you will meet Hampala Barb and the extremely powerful Thai Mahseer. For this type of lure fishing we use lure-like smaller spinners: e.g. Blue Fox Vibrax spinners or Spoons e.g. ABU toby or Møresilda spoons.

We can also arrange fly fishing for Giant Snakehead It's a challenging combatant for fly fishermen. large flies and poppers produce the best results. Flies that make a lot of noise are especially attractive. Please mention this at the time of booking to make sure we bring the correct equipment. You are also welcome to use your own equipment on our fishing trips if you prefer.

We only use top quality gear: Our fishing rods are manufactured on G. Loomis blanks model: GL2. Shimano Ultegra and Technium spinning reels loaded with Power Pro braided line. We have a huge selection of lures, Rapala wobblers and spoons and surface lures. All lures are assembled with Owner Hyper wire split rings, Owner ST-66-TN-4X treble hook, or WMC 8626-3X treble hook.
